It could be the fuel pump or possibly the fuel pressure regulator. If you could check what you are getting fuel pressure at idle it might help point you in the right direction. I had the same sort of problem with my truck, 2.3t swap, been fixing problems on it ever since I bought the thing, lol...

If you are doing a new fuel pump you might as well put in a bigger one while you're at it. Don't know what mods you have in mind but the stock fuel pump won't be enough for some mods like h/c/i or with boost.

It doesn't sound like its coming from the speakers does it? Sometimes the spark plug wires can cause a noise like a whine from the speaker and gets louder when you rev it higher.
