your favorite head/cam/intake setup on a shortblock 302ci??

I believe mine was around $300.
Save some money and call Comp and theyll find a cam that works for your application. I called them for my current cam and they asked a bunch of questions and told me which one to get then I bought it from Summit.
Basically by doing that youre eliminating the middle man.
I had an FTI selected cam (Ed Curtis) in my old motor. It took forever for him to get back to me with info and all and it was just a Comp cam when I got it anyway.
The car didnt have as much top end as I wouldve liked it to have with that cam and it seemed to fall on its face.
Never again.

don't waste your money on a custom cam you don't really need. keep in mind, its a street car not a race car where every single horsepower matters. with all the off the shelf cams available you can't tell me there isn't something available that will work well. i personally like the total top end kits from trick flow, holley and edelbrock. they are very proven combos that you know will work well together and make good power.
Was it an off the shelf comp cam, or a cam that comp cams ground for ed Curtis? I'm pretty sure comp cams grinds all of ed curtis' custom cams, but they're not off the shelf. They're tailored to your wants.
Custom cams are not just about getting a custom cam ground, you are getting the assurance that your heads, cam, and intake all flow together. They will all have the same powerband, and flow rates that work well together, not just random slapped together pieces.
Screw it all, just get a donkey dick cam(gm term)

I was looking at the whole trickflow kit and thats around 2700$ now, I have read that i can get a custom cam for around $400, afr 165 or afr 185 heads for around $1400-$1500 new and the intake i'm completely clueless as what to get lol but can probably find one for around $600 new. So thats around $2500 which is completely custom which seems like it'd make more horsepower than the trickflow kit. Trickflow is rated at 350hp, and a stock 5.0l lets just say is 220hp, afr heads= ~100hp, custom cam= ~25hp, Edelbrock Performer RPM II Intake= ~30hp so thats around 375hp and probably a better operating rpm so it'd be nearer to 380hp?... mixing and matching h/c/i seems like a better idea because it gets the buyer exactly what they want from their machine with a little more bang for the buck; but is it really that much better than the kits everyone seems to sell?
P.S. anyone know what a rebuilt 302 with afr 185 heads, edelbrock performer rpm II intake, and a custom cam could run in a quarter mile with street tires lol :x. Spent 5 hours looking for this setup and comparing to others and i think i may have found one worth getting?

The kits are designed to work well with all the included parts so theres no guessing if/how certain parts will work together.
Like Ive said I really wish I went that route the first time around.
i hear ya, but we're talking about a stock shortblock with a good topend. you won't find 10's on a stock short block, and we've all seen those people with "custom" parts that can hardly break 13's. i'm just thinking that an off the shelf top end kit is a good way for an inexperianced engine builder to know he's going to and be able to actually make good power without wasting money

custom parts and can barely brake 13s? Those are some seriously crappy parts. Bolt ons with a mild cam should be in the 13s without even touching the heads. Most custom setups should get you well into the 11s, with some being in the 10s
Why is getting a custom setup not for the inexperienced? All you do is send a builder a list of what you want your car to do(DD, full on race car, weekend warrior, etc.), he sends you a part list with price, you pay him, you get the parts.. they get installed. Simple as that. This is going under the simple assumption that you actually talk to a reputable builder such as ed curtis.
Don't underestimate a well setup pushrod!

Yeah maybe some guys who can't drive for shit, or didn't bother putting on any kind of upgraded suspension parts and slicks probably went 13s... If you want to make some good power go with some custom pieces, if you want something not as fast, go with one of the top end kits. Personally, if you have the money to put a good setup on, I would. I would be pissed to put 2700 on a top end kit just to be disappointed, and wanting more power.
