Where to look for parts?

Hey, guys. So I've gotten it in my head what I want to do and basically, I'm going to redo it all. :D Most of the exterior parts on my car are in decent shape but I want to get a new driver side door (dent on the bend that probably wont just pop out & rust in back lower corner) and DS front fender (you can't see it in pics but looks like the previous owner ran over a rake :nono:). I want to put original parts back on her though. Do any of you have any places to start looking? I was perusing eBay and Craig's list over the weekend w/ little to no luck. I also plan on replacing the dash (it looks like the Austin Power shag mobile) and the interior of doors to start. I'm open to any and all ideas (but save the engine stuff for later - I'm not ready for that yet).

This will probably be a long process but I'm going to strip her down starting this spring and build her back up but I gotta track down the parts I want. Many thanks, in advance. :)

Hey, Good post,This is what we need in this section a little life.

First to address The above quote,If you're going to be doing some parts shopping this season,I'd be inclined to leave your car together and drive it a bit "AS IS".That's just my opinion,I wouldn't lay the car up until you are 100 % ready to start the work.That's just my thought,I base that on I know how things (life ) can get in the way with a project so if you leave it together you can still enjoy it.I also like seeing early cars on the road,no matter how they look.

As far as where you are looking for parts I think ebay and Craigslist can be good if you find the right person selling stuff at the right time,Swap meets (like Carlisle) Can be good as well,But most people know what they have there and it shows in the pricing.I'll keep my eyes open for you. Now to talk about some specific parts for your car,I would try my hardest to use the body parts that you have inlieu of going with new repo sheet metal parts. Is there anyway for you to post photos of the body damage? (I saw your picture in the picture section,so We may have to wait for some snow melt on this).

As far as A dash pad they are available new I'm not sure of your interior color but they are only available in black or neutral (dye to match) only.They can run around $350 -$400 plus shipping,ouch.Unfortunately finding a good used one of these is almost impossible as they all went bad around the speaker area.

Please feel free to post any and all questions,I'll try my best.As stated I can also help you locate parts new or used.

By the way,If you are looking to add a Rumble seat,Let me know I can advise you on that as well.LOL......:D

Yeah, I probably wont be taking too much apart till 1. the snow melts and 2. either get the shop built or the mother in law's garage cleaned out. I'm strictly thinking about exterior and interior at the moment but we will bust the engine out and go over everything, sand and clean it all up and repaint.

I'll have to check my pics at home to see if I have any close ups of the dents, bends and rust. bondo might take care of the door but I'm not sure. I know the husband and I talked about it and whatever we do replace will be original parts (if we can find them).

The interior is black. The dash is massively cracked in three spots thus the carpet cover up by the previous owner.

Edit: My Marti report didn't list the rumble seat option... :(

I'll let the "Rumble seat" Lay. (I thought you'd get a kick out of the photo though).

That said Take a good look at your panels if they are fixable I'd go that route not necessarily the "Bondo" route but if your panels are just dented or rusted in isolated areas they can and should be fixed,I can help give you a general idea ,through some photos when you get them. I know what you are saying about fixng the car with all original parts,That's a great idea. But something to consider most of the parts used to fix your car are the same ones used to fix Boss 302's,Boss 429's, Mach 1's, Shelbies. So some(most) of these items will be priced high. Personally I try to do stuff on the cheap so if I can fix or find reasonable original I go that way everytime,But when I can't Repo is the route I take. Not all repo parts are bad But some of the repo metal leaves a bit to be desired and can require quite a bit of body working to make them line up.

yeah that was my fear with a repo is all the extra ache it might be. But never say never, eh? I had the door panels off last summer and they're not too terrible but we'll see... the DS door rust is definitely bigger than a 1/2 dollar all the way through and i know there was some other bubbling going on in other places under the paint. So, it'll be a few surprises I'm sure when I get down to a "clean" slate.

LOL and um, yeah, sure, I'll keep the rumble seat in mind....

If you use reproduction parts make sure that you do not opt for the cheapest ones. I have heard lots of stories where cheap parts such as door panels, dashes, etc do not fit into the same place as the original.

I have heard that the Scott Drake parts are pretty good.

Year One is pretty good, but kind of pricey. I got a lot of original parts for my Skylark from Ebay, just have to keep looking, chances are somebody has it and will post it eventually.

I have heard from some of the guys on VMF that the repo doors for the 69/70 are quite good I believe some have used them with good results & I need to get one for my 69 Coupe. As far as the dash top the Ford tooling one I heard is very good repo. Hope that helps. Now that it is warming up I am going to start stripping the crappy blue paint off my Coupe to see what suprises are underneath.

Hey, Mike. Do you really think the Ford Tooling dash pad is good enough? I've been checking prices and such online and am starting to purchase replacement parts. I want to make the right decision. :confused:

From some of the guys on VMF that have 69/70 Mustangs the Ford tooling dash pad seems the bway to go, that is the one I am going to get for mine when the time comes.
