Coming into the final event of the Formula Drift season at Irwindale Speedway both Falken Ford Mustang drivers, Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Justin Pawlak, had a chance at winning the championship. Gittin, leading the points after six rounds thanks to back-to-back wins in the middle of the season, had the best chance, but Pawlak couldn’t be counted out either.
Unfortunately neither driver sat on top of the points standings at the end of the weekend. Gittin was knocked out in the round of sixteen due to a misstep during his second run, dropping him to second overall, and Pawlak’s second place finish could only propel him to fourth in the championship. Although both would have liked to have been crowned champion, the success and consistency of both drivers in the series is impressive. This season marks the third straight year that a Mustang driver has finished in the top two – Gittin finished first in 2010 and Pawlak a close second in 2011.
