well, from what I understand, the less things that are in the way of exhaust flow(for example, mufflers and cats), the more power the engine can put out. So I believe straight pipe will add more hp. And for straight pipes there's a couple options..... 1. go aftermarket and buy in my opinion, an offroad xpipe with no cats, and I don't think you can buy a catback with no mufflers so you can get a custom made catback. or 2. Just go to an exhaust shop and have them make a header back straight pipe exhaust. But having straight pipe will absolutely deafen you. My brother had an 89 5.0 with straight pipe and you couldn't think while driving. It depends on preference. So personally I'd say to go with an off road xpipe and a resonator catback or muffler'd catback. Either way it will sound mean as can be with no cats. And a side note, there are plenty of catted and muffler'd stangs out there that lay down just about the same power as a straight piped car.
You'll get more top end power with less back pressure you have in your exhaust but you'll lost some low end torque. All depends on what you're looking for. With my V6 I just went with an axle-back so I could get the sound I wanted without sacrificing the low end too much.
Please don't do straight pipes, bolt on straight pipe 5.0's belong at fairs, if you want something loud get an O/R mid pipe and a Pypes catback or some SLP mufflers.

I agree with this guy. I have a SLP catted x pipe on my 04 gt with an SLP loudmouth 2 catback and it is plenty loud. no cats on a muffled catback will sound very nice.
