Steve Saleen has been two years removed from Saleen Inc., the company he started some 25 years ago after he retired and moved on in 2007. After his retirement Hancock Park LLC who owned a large share of Saleen Inc. ran the company into the ground thus forcing a sale of certain Saleen Inc. assets to MJ Acquisitions, a Michigan based automotive conglomerate. After purchasing Saleen Inc. assets which include Saleen Vehicles, Superchargers and Parts MJ Acquisitions said they would dissolve warranties on all Saleen vehicles and parts prior to February 2, 2009 leaving many Saleen owners in the dark for warranty claims.
Upon hearing the disappointing news Steve Saleen stepped up to the plate and said his new company SMS Supercars would honor warranty claims on Saleen vehicles and products purchased up to February 2, 2009 even though legally he has no responsibility to do so
“I was saddened about the way the current owners of the proud company I founded, and which held onto my name after my departure two years ago, have now dealt with my loyal and longtime customers,” said Saleen.
“The ones who have been left out in the cold are the loyal customers of Saleen products,” added Saleen, “While my new company, SMS Supercars, has no legal or moral obligation to take up any of the warranty claims against Saleen, Inc. or MJ Acquisitions, Inc., I would like to make a bold statement on the right way to treat customers.”
Steve has said, “If any Saleen customer in the United States who purchased a Saleen, Inc. product up until February 2, 2009, has a warranty claim, they can directly contact my new company, SMS Supercars. We will honor their remaining warranties as if they were SMS Supercars warranties.” SMS Supercars’ warranty terms will apply.
Who knows what the costs associated with this bold move will cost SMS supercars but I bet he has won some new fans over with his actions. Way to go Steve Saleen!
