First held in 1974, the historic automobile races in Monterey (now called the Monterey Motorsports Reunion) have become one of the automotive highlights of the year for vintage car enthusiasts. Every August hundreds of classic race cars and thousands of spectators gather at the legendary Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for a weekend of automotive celebration.
Of course, the Ford Mustang plays a role in the event, having competed in motorsports since its introduction in 1964. This year more than half a dozen Shelby Mustangs, including the genuine GT350R model pictured above, competed in Group 5A, 1963-1966 GT cars with an engine displacement of over 2.5-liters.
