This past week dozens of Ford Mustangs went up for auction as part of the Monterey car week, several of which were available at RM. While the auction house is most known for offering up high dollar European sports cars, they also have the occasional Mustang as well including two Shelby GT350R race cars in the past twelve months. This year some fine examples were up for grabs including a 1966 Shelby GT350H race car, a 1969 Mustang Boss 429 and the very last 1970 Shelby GT350 ever built. This Mustang Boss 429 is one of 859 produced in 1969 and one of the first 50 “priority built” cars. Painted in Candy Apple Red, the car has been meticulously restored by Ed Meyer who is the head judge at the Shelby American Automobile Club. The car comes with the warranty papers, build sheet and other paperwork from the original dealer. The final price of $275,000 is on the high end for a restored Boss 429, but well deserved.
The later Shelby Mustangs generally don’t garner as much attention as the earlier models, particularly the GT350, but this particular has something special going for it. It’s the very last Shelby GT350 ever built, at least in the classic sense. It’s a one-of-one in terms of its build specification and is painted in rare Grabber Yellow, further adding to the value. The GT350 is also in immaculate condition thanks to a light restoration in 2006, has just over 27,000 miles and still has its original window sticker, build sheet, warranty papers, Shelby invoice and more. The selling price of $189,750 is far more than any other 1970 GT350, but perhaps rightly so.
If you’re looking to race a Mustang rather than own a restored example, than this 1966 Shelby GT350H is the car for you. One of the original Hertz rental cars, this Shelby was sold to its first owner in 1966 and became a race car soon thereafter. It was restored in 2003 and fitted with a specially build 295 cubic inch engine producing 575 horsepower and 450 lb-ft torque. The car also features American Racing R-model wheels, Kirkey aluminum racing seats, 5-point harnesses and an R-model dashboard and gauges. At $104,500, this GT350H is a fairly affordable way to go vintage racing.
