Um, Catt, you have to push the clutch in to get it out of first. I wouldn't recommend floating the gears just yet... jk jk jk 
You'll get it. Just listen to the engine and she'll tell you when it's time to shift. I think it's different for women to learn stick than men. We're a lot more dainty (so to speak) about pushing in the clutch and pulling her out of 1 gear to the other. so syncing up the gears and flywheel (i think fly wheel, I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong) gets a little "delayed." Until you learn it and learn your car (EVERY manual trans is different - imo) then it all falls into place.

... but I drove his car on 3 or 4 different occasions and only stalled it twice ... i just can't coordinate my four limbs to do four different things .... I'm sure I'll get it .... just going to take time and patience ...you have to feel the clutch with your foot. practice letting it ouf of first gear slowly and you will actually feel the clutch engage. What you can also do is practice with the car off. Of course you wont' feel the clutch engaging but you can practice your timing. clutch pedal down , shift, clutch pedal down shift. The only thing that sucks is stop and go traffic. You will develop strong calf muscles. kinda sexy on a woman.
