Head Swap

Hey guys. Its been great running into some of you at local shows this season. Im looking at doing a mild head swap on my motor. Its a carb'd 306 with a b cam currently has e6 heads :nono:. Im interested in a set of gt40p heads and was wondering what you all thought. I was just wondering a few things.
Since Im planning on using 1.7 rockers will i need new length pushrods or anything(springs, locks retainers)? Will the valves work with shorty headers? Thanks and I look forward to the responses. I have a set of heads lines up to buy this week if I like what I hear!

Well since i only have a mild cam i was thinking about going with gt40p heads. Ive seen a set locally with mild porting for 300. On top of that I wouldnt mind spending some more on beefing up the internals of the heads.

I agree with D1, you can find a used set of AFR 165's and you will be MUCH happier. There $$$$$$$$$$$ New but you get what you pay for!!

I think you would also have to replace your headers in order to run the gt40p's

Yes you do, the angle is not the same.

What headers fit with the gt40 heads? I wish I could get another set of heads but for the price I think gt40s are the way to go.

Depends on what you want long tubes or shorties but the exhaust ports are square not round so keep that in mind I have a pair of long tube hedman huslters but summit has tons of headers that fit just call tech support and they will hook u up wit brands and prices

THe ports on my headers are square. Is it possible that they will be compatible? Theyre mac equal lengths. I would like to keep shorties to avoid also changing my h pipe.

Yea its possible just measure the ports on the heads and headers to make sure they fit properly and throw on a new gasket and ur good to go

I thought the bolt holes were different not the port shape. The gt 40 I think were a diagional pattern and the e series heads were straight across?????

GT40P are good budget heads, they are guys making 290 or so RWHP with them. If you look in Corral there is a guy with a Exploder motor stock other than a HO cam running low 12's. A guy that races at LVD ran 12.17@110 with the STOCK cam and GT40P/Cobra intake/65mm TB/3.55 etc.

They don't get alot of credit sometimes and if you can get some for $300 I'd go for it if they are all redone.

But I won't pay much for used heads PERIOD unless I know they have been to a machine shop.

And going from E6 to GT40P is a HUGE difference!!!!
