Thanks, I've been planning on converting a car to an electric vehicle (EV) for a while. I own an 80 Triumph Spitfire and I was going to convert that, but then I got deployed. I decided to pay someone else to do the converting while I'm over here.
I quickly decided the Spit was going to be too small -- I want the EV to be my daily driver -- so I started looking on Ebay and Craigslist for other cars to convert. My first car ever was a '65 Mustang convertible (bought it while I was in basic training) so when I saw this one I knew it was what I wanted.
The guy who owned this Mustang had started converting it to be a drag racer about 25 years ago. He had put in a T5 tranny, a 9" rear, racing suspension, fiberglass panels and lids, and other racing modifications. Then he lost interest (or ran out of money) and the car had been in storage since.
Because all the modifications he made were also good for an EV (making it lighter and stronger), it was a great fit for me. I also didn't have to feel guilty about 'ruining' a classic Stang, since this one had been torn up already.
So that's where I'm coming from. The car's in Oregon now. I found the car in the Portland Craigslist and found a converter that lived near there. So far, not much as been done on the conversion. I've upgraded the brakes to 4-wheel disk (to handle the extra battery weight), but other than that I haven't needed to change much.
The actual converting should start soon and I'll be sure to post more pictures as it goes along. I get back to my home in Niskayuna next month and hopefully the car will get shipped over at about the same time.
Then I get to start painting and restoring. I'll probably be asking you all for some advice on that stuff!
