Drum Brakes Suck

Well, now that the obvious isd stated...does anyone have any tips for putting rusted drums off? I sprayed the hell out of them, let them sit, then hammered them and nothing. Then I whipped out the handy MAP torch and heated them up and hammered on them....nothing. Any other tips? I sprayed them again and I I can't get them in a few more cycles then I'm just going to load them up and then let them sit over night.:mad:

Patience is something that I lack at times, which is easily proved by a hole in my garage door about the size of a pry bar....lol. It's not like the shoes are stuck against the drum, it won't slide off of the hub center.

Don't try to pry it off then. Take your hammer and hit the drum on the face, towards the axle. Try not to phuck up the wheel studs. Hit that bitch hard and it will pop free of the axle face.

I wasn't prying it off, that happened a while back. lol. I'll try banging it from the front.....(wait's for comment about that).:D Thanks mang.

If your trying to get your old drums off. There is something else you can do. On the back ot the rear there is a slot. Might be cover by a rubber plug. It would be center of the backing plate and towards the bottom. That slot you can stick a flat head screwdriver threw and move the star gear. You want to retract the gear. What it is probally doing is it is pushed the brake pads against the drum and that is why you can't get the drums off.

Ok just thought of something also. But you don't have the E-brake up do you. That will also stop the drums from comming off. E brake handle must be in the down postion.

Looks where his hands are and you will see the aduster I'm talking about Long thing laying flat with the whell on the bottom

I agree w/ jkstang78 make sure the e-brake is down, and back down the adjustment of the shoes through the slot at the back of the drum backing plate. This will move the shoes away from the drum allowing more movement.

Anyone know what size the rear brakes are on a stock LX 7.5....9" or 10"? I'm ordering a new spring set and new drum cylinders but it lists both 9 and 10 inch...:confused:

There should be 2 retainer springs that hold the shoes to the backing plate. The pin that these springs are attached to go through the backing plate, the heads of the pins are about 1/4inch in diameter, you get new ones in the hardware kit. grind the back of the pin off and that will let the shoes move out enough to let the drum slide off. that is the easiest way if they are caught on the shoes.:smash:
