93 Mustang 5.0 Auto

I am looking at a 93 Mustang Auto.87,000 miles. I don't know to much about Auto's I have always owned 5spd Stang. I'm going to go see the car on Sunday and the owner says the car shifts hard he says it may be a shift kit installed. How do I know? How do I know if the car doesn't have a shift kit and it just shifts hard. I'm going to assume no shift kit. Do these cars shift hard normally.

Everyone that is selling an auto will tell you there is a shift kit in it...

No my first trany had a shift kit and it shifted hard the new trany in the NYM Fox is stock and it shifts pretty smooth

Is there anything I could look for to see if it has a shift kit or if the tranny is just going bad like the condition of the fluid or by looking at the tranny itself

It's tough to call without driving a stock auto or pulling the pan off and looking in there.

Thanks for your help! With a shift kit is it going to shift hard through all the gears? If a stock tranny is going bad would it also shift hard through all the gears. Thanks everyone

just try and feel if its shifting or just kinda slipping into gear thats about it..

A low mile AOD will shift firmer but none of them stock shift real hard. My 93 GT had 57k miles on it though all stock and would break loose into 2nd gear with 3.27 gears. That AOD was a nice shifting tranny, the other AOD cars I've had shifted slower. Make sure OD works ok and that there is no slip.

I would guess a shift kit. The stock tranny is pretty sloppy. Way to much
slip. Even trying the 1st to second back to 1st didn't really do anything.
Thats why I got a lentech. Night and day difference.

Ya the 1-D-1 shuffle is bad for the tranny. I tested it at the track on 2 of my AOD cars and it didn't make it quicker either. My 89 AOD was a little sloppy but the one in my 93 GT shifter firm but had low miles on it when I bought it.

I didn't mean to imply all the trannys were sloppy but I do feel it was the weakest link. Mine was really junk. I really didn't notice how inadequate it really was until I started to add the go fast parts, especially the KB. The car wanted to go but I had to wait until the tranny stopped slipping and grab. Actually, way back when, I know a shift kit was a popular mod. That's why I said it was probably a kit. Way cheaper than a performance tranny. I did buy a Baumann shift kit but never installed it. After sitting for a year in the closet I finally decided on getting the Lentech.
