Hey classicpony. Funnything about this post. I got a call from a friend on Saturday. He bought a Mustang a while back , His son threw out the paperwork. So my question since it's fresh for you now,Do you happen to know what exact Form or forms are needed from the N.Y. DMV? I did a vin trace on one a million years ago and I'm sure the whole system has changed. Thanks
Ponyboy, i already am feeling the pain for your friend. lol -- was the car ever registered in NY? Did it come from out of state? when was the last time it was registered? Reason for this -- if its NYS, as you know, there is NO title for cars 72 And older... your registration is the only transferrable proof you have of the vehicle, if its an out of state vehicle, then chances are, depending on state, you should have a title. When i registered my car, i had at least the title for the car -- and filled out your standard registration forms (registration form, bill of sale). The VIN Tracing was your standard trace (piece of paper, scratching on the vin number onto the paper) AND for safety measures i took a pic of it from my iPhone and printed it out -- my only reservation to this, is to take a HQ Pic and print it on HQ paper so all the numbers are visible and CLEAR. If ANY number does not clear at all, then just go ahead and get a PO to verify the VIN. Normally you can call your local PO and tell them your situation, DO NOT SPEAK TO A PO... Speak to someone from the Community Affairs department of your Police station -- they are there to help in situations just like this. If they can't help, speak to someone in the Crime Unit, they should be able to help to. Always talk try to talk to an older cop and do it face to face, they seem to understand more whats needed for a VIN Trace, the new officers aren't too sure about this or ever heard of it.
Hope this somewhat helps... if all else fails, and there is no title, registration, nothing, or a reprint can't be requested via DMV then you might have to get the vehicle re-vin'ed.
