S197's have had problems with sticking when its really cold but this guys situation I bet the e-brake has worn down and couldn't hold the weight on a incline. OP, you might want to go to the dealer to see if they could check your e-brake out and tighten it back up.

I always put my car in gear no matter if its on a incline or not.
