I changed my alt last year & since then I was having intermittant problems like you describe. Turned out to be the stock molex clip/plug that plugs into the alt. The new alt pins arnt as beefy as the OEM alt pins. Had to bend the metal tabs inside the plug so it makes better contact w/ the 3...

Closer coils are softer/more movement, will coil bind 1st, cut them. You dont want to hit the bumpstops all the time.
