What size are the bolts that hold down the pedestal to the head? if there 3/8", start at about 288 inch pound that = 24 foot pounds and work your way up to 336 inch pounds or 28 foot pounds, I also use Blue Lock tight on them as an extra measure, but that's just Me lol, are you runing a heafty...

U could try without them first and if your valves are not making noise your good to go, I would try to to start the engine without them first and make sure it reaches operating temperature, U may not need the shims, if by any chance your getting a valve tap, then your going to have to re-install...

Were the shims used on the Aluminum heads or the stock heads?, are your rocker arms pedestal mounted or stud mounted?

What ever or how ever U choose to do this, Do Not over Torque Your Head or you will flatten out the Head Gaskets and that will cost U trouble lol
