Sounds like an awesome project to me. Like any other drivetrain swap like this I am sure it will require some custom work like motor and trans mounts and some fab work on the rear to bolt it up. Also, lots of wires to deal with.

How do yo know it was a main bearing, a backfire has nothing to do with a spun main bearing. Also never heard a spun bearing that stopped knocking on it's own.

Tempurature has an effect on any materal you are trying to weld. Aluminum more than steel but steel is still effected. I would use a simple propane torch to pre-heat where your going to weld at least up to a normal room temperature. If not you will end up with a cold start. Probabaly not a...

If you have never done gears before it is probabaly a good idea to have some one else do them that will let you watch and explain or just have someone help you that has done it before. I have no doubt you could do it but explaining it is tough. You need an install kit complete with bearings...
