As inside your engine since 93% of the gas you put into it is Octane, the combustion catalyst in gasoline. High octane, burns off more gas and leaves less excess residue.

It might just be a pipe and a big filter on it, but it really does make a difference. They are designed to pull in more air and at lower temperatures then your stock air box. This increase in air helps ignitions greatly, as the main mixture is air eg 10:1 compression 10 units of air for 1 unit...
