The ideal FM antenna is 114" or one wave length of the average FM signal. Anything less than 114" is less than ideal. In decreasing the antenna size it is best to stick with lengths that are equal to 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16 wave lengths.
28.5" ( 1/4 wave length) is considered the most practical for cars. 14.25" (1/8 wave) would be the best alternative and as a last resort 7.125 (1/16). However the decrease in effectiveness increases exponentially as the antenna becomes shorter, so when it becomes that short the difference between 1/8 wave and 1/16 wave is not that great.
