I need your opinion on exhaust plans

Hey guys...so since I was having trouble with my exhaust fitment...i have decided to do the following and wanted to get your opinion on my plan.

the attached image is a picture of the stock midpipe for my 04.

I was planning on cutting the long cats that i have marked with red and replace that spot by a straight pipe.

I will keep the small cats labeled in yellow....the dots marked with pink is where the O2 sensors are located.

My questions is...since the two sensors will read the small cats will I be needing MIL's? i am thinking no.

How do you guys think it will sound with just those 2 small cats?


I have flowmasters 40's but I might be replacing the mufflers with MAC flowpath.

are the downstream 02 sensors after the large cats?? if so the CEL will more than likely come on, as far as sound I don't think it is gonna be worth cutting up the factory pipe with the small cats still there.... IMO

SORRY :smash: just re-read that post, you should be fine with CEL the longer cats are not monitored,my guess is the longer "cats" are resonators

yeah i think the longer cats are resonators as well. visual won't be a problem...but I see they are 40...a piece?

Yeah, $40 a piece....they have non stainless steel for a few bucks less but I'd spend the extra so they don't rust.

It will just burn off. The cats get really hot. Why not just get an offroad x or h?

It's less than $200 for a Fox mid pipe....cant be much more for your car.

The rear two are scrubber cats, and are not monitored. But they need to be there to pass visual inspection.

i was going to use the Thermo Tec Hi-Heat Coating that is good for up to 2000 degrees

and i dont want an offroad pipe because the passenger side muffler is hitting the chassis with another midpipe...prochamber too

For one, I would not be able to stand to look at at when i would be under the car werking. Painted exhaust? really? LOL! On the positive side the car wont feel so hot in the summer because the paint would insulate the pipes! I would just go buy the right x or h pipe. Maybe you need to have one customized slightly for your application?

why not just get an O/R H pipe and swap the stock one back in for inspection?

Also you can make MILs for about 15 bucks and they work on a completely O/R exhaust too. Ive had my homemade ones in my stang for over 2 years with no codes.

If you've already got a midpipe, and it's the proper midpipe and catback for your car, and you're having issues, something's tweaked- either the exhaust or your frame.

Just massage the existing bends in the pipe to give you the clearance you need. It'll be easier and cheaper to do it this way than to keep experimenting with stuff.
