Funny for me to read the Sonic Boom project.
Last night about 8 p.m. my 03 was finished on the dyno. Results: 500+rwhp. Boost a shade over 14.
For me, this was a little dissapointing. I was thinking more along the lines of 520 or so.
Let me SHED SOME LIGHT ON THE EATON!
JLT Short tube, Accufab Big Oval and Power Plenum, SCT2600, Stage 6 Steg Port, #8 lower, #60 injectors, BAP, and here's the key to my point, a 3.2 upper instead of the 3.65 stocker.
We start with the dyno: long story short here, once he starts making pulls, I'm DOWN 25 hp at 17+ lbs!! WTF?
Adam knows what's up but he finishes dialing everything in to make certain. At 17 lbs, the Eaton has become PARASITIC and is taking more hp to drive it than it is delivering.
What to do? Take off the 3.2 upper.
Result: solid 14 lbs, and in the end, 500+ rwhp. Like I said, I wanted a bit more but it ain't gonna happen with a "safe" tune.
Why? Cali shit gas 91 oct. and the fact that we don't have the sweet atmospheric conditions you enjoy in the east.
My tune is by design running somewhat rich and is not pushing the timing to scary levels, both of which produce bit less hp, but for a DD street car on shit gas it's the wise choice.
Still blown away by the Sonic Boom post, especially today!
BTW, there's a comp orange terminator coupe "hiding" from the reposessors. The owner is parting stuff out. a KB 2.8 with 3k on it can be had for 4K.
I've got all the mods needed to strap that bitch on and pound another 100 plus hp out of it, but the blower upgrade will be down the line sometime.
Conclusion: 500+ hp can be had for a few grand, like Sonics project indicates. I'm sure a bunch of people are gonna say they get much more and there are reasons for this: you're not in Cali, you're running leaner than I am, you have more total timing than I'm running, and IMHO, there are lots of tuners who want to show you a number you want to see. Their dyno's are set to show somewhat exagerrated numbers and they will be more willing to have numbers than what really makes sense for your engine.
Conclusion 2: The Big Oval kicks ass! I already had a decent CAI, but the Accufab and JLT short tube added 3 lbs boost by themselves. Good, efficient boost I might add.
DON'T STARVE YOU ENGINE FOR INTAKE AIR or you are giving up your efficiency. :nono:
