Took the wife out for a little cruise tonight with the new, used mustang. Drove great, rides pretty good and has decent power for what it is. We were almost home and I decided to see what the old girl had left in her. 0-60 from a dead stop and then I shut it down. As I got out of the gas I noticed the smell of oil. Got it home and began to look around. The entire top of the trans is wet and it runs down both sides. I have ruled out a head gasket due to the fact that it is pretty much centered in the car. I have never had the intake off a 5.0 so I don't know how they seal to the valley Chevy's just use RTV to seal the ends. Is there any place other than between the block and lower intake the leak could be coming from? It has been doing it for a wile based on the amount of road crud that is stuck to the top of the trans. I also see what I think are the tranny lines running accrost the top of the trans as well but this is definitely oil and not ATF.

the 2 top places that leak on 302's are the back of the intake which is sealed with a cork gasket that never seals until you rtv it, and the valve covers. the pcv valve may also leak but the rear main seal wouldnt be a likely culprit as gravity has a funny way of pulling oil down not up let alone down then out then around the trans then up to the top.
I guess I'm not quite understanding how a rear main seal leak would put oil on top of the trans. This was like a stream of oil running down both sides of the transmission. It was so bad that it soaked both of the cats. I am gona pull the upper and lower intake off and see if it was from between the valley and the lower intake. Only issue I have is the lack of gaskets to put it back together so I may be SOL untill tuesday to put it back together.
I don't doubt you one bit that there is a problem with the rear main seal, you know this car better than I do. I have seen rear mains that wern't even really there and they still didn't produce oil running down the top of the trans and on the back upper part of the motor. Only way the oil can get up there is if there was a gap between the motor and trans, and there isn't. TC could be flinging oil all over but there is no way it could get enough to go between the motor and trans to make it run a solid stream down both sides of the trans.

The rear of the intake was never sealed. What is there in the picture is just how it was under the intake.

I have seen 2 different type intake gasket on original 5.0's. some have the orange print-o-seal type and some are the graphite coated style.
