Camshaft and spring replacement

Hey guys! A buddy of mine want me to install a camshaft in his 2000 GT. What I need to know is how many hours are required to get the job done? If any of you have had this done at a shop let me know what they whacked you for on the labor, I can figure out the labor time with that figure. He is also not sure on what cam to run. He doesn't want to have to change the springs but wants the best cam in the world. lol. Its a bolt on car exhaust, pulleys, cia, sct tune. Hes also going to add 125 shot to it as well. The only reason he wants a cam is for the sound. That lope that everyone loves. So to the point, from what Ive been reading is that it not worth putting in a cam that doesn't not require springs as most of the cams that don't require spring changes don't really provide any lope. So if anyone has some different suggestions on what cam to run help would be great. I don't know too much about OHC performance so I think its time to learn a bit. Also I believe the car has a manual trans. Thanks a lot!:smash:

Thats all good. I know how to put them in, I just really need to know how much time required so I can give a rough idea on what I'm going to have to charge for labor.

Just ONE camshaft????? That thing would run a little lopsided, don't ya think? Just kidding. Get ahold of the tech guys at Comp or Crane. They'll lead you in the right direction. I'll check with a friend of mine too. I'll post tomorrow.

It took Adrian (Bossman429) and I 18 hours taking our time, and the last 4 hours drinking and dragging our feet. We are by no means professionals, and we didnt have any time constraints so like I said, we took our time. We replaced both cams and springs.

damn you must need some new boots, thats alot of dragging. jk if your not replacing the timing chain id say less 4 hours. thats if you know the secret hand shake and dont take off the timing cover. if you have to pull the timing cover pry around 8 maybe. as long as theres no blower

Ive never done an ohc replacment I'm not sure they can be done without pulling the timing cover. I know the tensioner is under the cover, but I know with some cars there is enough slack in the chain to allow you to pull the cams off the gears. Thats not usually the option with belt systems.

I actually kinda think there a waste of time performance wise. But he wants the sound. Id put the money twords heads first.

Being that he plans on running a good shot of funny gas should he replace the cam gears with adjustable ones to retard the timing at the track?:confused:
