Hey all,
I don't want to sound like I am complaining, (well I guess I am alittle) But this is gonna be a long rant. First of all, Like always I had a great time hanging out with everyone. It is always a pleasure. But to get to the point, People need to learn the meaning of the word custom. I went to this show ONLY because there was a 79-93 "custom" class. Not one other 79-93 mustang that was there (aside from mabey the drag car) was considered custom in my book. I could have built any one of those cars simply by opening up any number of catalogs, ordering parts, and bolting them on. I'm sorry, but a bolt on car should be considered modified, NOT custom. Custom is when you can NOT purchase parts to complete your project, but instead have to make your own, or combine parts from 3 cars to accomplish 1 task. Custom is when there is not a single nut or bolt on your car that didn't require an hour or mor of fabrication to make fit and funtion properly. Custom is something unique that you may have never seen and mabey will never see again.
Now let's stop there for a minute. I understand that I do not have the best paint, brightest engine, etc, etc... But I am confident that I have personally built one of , if not the most unique CUSTOM Mustangs you may ever see. And, there are hundreds of hours in fabrication work, cutting, welding, shaping, that you will never see. This now brings me to my next statement.
This one reaches out beyond me, and affects everyone in some way. The people judging cars and hosting shows need to take some things into consideration if they are going to have shows open to "all" cars. First of all, know when you have a "custom" car or a "modified" car. For stock classes, just because it's a V8 , doesn't mean it's a cleaner car if that is what you say you base your judging on. Also , not all of us live to wipe our cars with a rag non stop. we like to drive them. And for those of us with truly clean nice cars, don't say it's dirty when you have us park in a pollen infested forest, I could probably go on like this all day, but I think you get the point.
I went to the show today because I was excited that I had a fighting chance at actually winning something to show for my hard work. My car fit perfectly into that 79-93 "custom" class. But not when you put chromed out bolt-on foxes and trailer queen drag cars to compete with. Again , this car is not that nice. It is more of one of those "cool" cars. Like "hey wow, cool car man. never seen any thing like it." HENCE CUSTOM !!!
Bottom line is, we all have our issues with this and that every now and again. We all get compliments from the people walking by. The fellow car guys know what's up, so when will the show guys. I don't thing it's greedy of any of us to ask, to judge us correctly and give us a fighting chance at taking home a little something for our efforts is what we have brought out for the world to see. No matter if it's been brought out by thousands of hours in labor or thousands of dollars in parts or countless hours of simply driving and loving our cars.
So to wrap up my rant. We ALL have nice cars, because our cars are just that...."OURS" Each and every one is special to each and every one of us in some way. I suppose I aswered my own riddle on my topic with that statement. And on a greater level, I answered all of us. Who cares what other people say think or judge. We have what we do because WE wanted it and made it happen our own way. I guess there might be a little "custom" in all of our things.....................
........................But a nice little $20 hunk of plastic trophy every now and then would be nice too !!!
