Mine was leaking(95 v6) so I read a few guides online and didn't really remove it properly. I didn't take any preload measurements or mark anything, but I did take pictures of how the nut was sitting and counted the number of threads(the guide, from a parts store, not just a random thing I found online, just said "count the number of threads"). I don't have a service manual but I can probably get access to one.
First of all the seal I'm looking at doesn't look like my replacement seal. I haven't removed it yet, I'm thinking someone swapped in an 8.8" rear? I'll have to check. The car has some modifications and the previous owner knew nothing.
I'm reading horrible things that can happen if the preload isn't right, such as the rear end locking up a few thousand miles down the road. My question is, when I put the new seal in, and put the pinion nut back on, will I be ok if I put it on the same number of threads as it was before? Should I look at a manual and torque it to a specific number?
I'm handing the keys over to my girlfriend's cousin next week, and I need to know that it's going to be 100% safe. If its not, what other (economical) options do I have? Should I try to find another rear end to swap in or something?
thanks!
