Earlier today Ford and Shelby American unveiled the 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra, a one-off Mustang as a tribute to the late Carroll Shelby. Edsel Ford II and Shelby President John Luft pulled the wraps off the car in front of an eager audience at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, revealing the 850 horsepower beast. Featuring several styling features from the Cobra, the special GT500 gets a widened rear body to fit 345 wide tires, Shelby/Wilwood brakes on all four corners, 20-inch wheels and a traditional Shelby paint scheme of Guardsman Blue with Wimbledon White stripes. Under the hood the 5.8-liter aluminum V8 has been fitted with a Whipple 4.0-liter supercharger system.
Shelby says that they have no plans to make a production version of the GT500 Cobra, although some items like the widened rear fenders are slated to appear on future Shelby Mustangs. Someone will have a chance to own this particular car, however, as Shelby plans on eventually auctioning it off for charity.
If you want to see the 2013 Shelby GT500 Cobra for yourself you can check it out at the Ford display at the Monterey Motorsports Reunion. If you can’t make it out to the event, then you’ll have to settle for our photos of the car being unveiled in the gallery below.
