i need help, did i break my clutch or tranny?

hi , i have a 1995 ford mustang, 3.8l,standard.i was racing a truck with a full car and tank, 1 went to 4rpms, then 2 to 4 rpms, and did that to forth. i won but now, my mustang is sluggish.i put it in first and i have to give it so much gas to go anywere, it take 15 to 30 seconds to get to 15mph from a stop.a new clutch is 175 tax included.but is this what i need?i get wensday and thursday off, if you want to send me a message to help that would be nice.but if you know alot about cars or mustangs, you could come over on my day off and drive it or look at it and let me know what to do.my home phone is 326 3565.i live in waterford, ny.thanks and please send me some helpfull info, thanks tim, aka mustang man

Hmm, is there any strange noises? Is the engine stuttering or does it just feel like it's being held back? You have a very broad description.

here is a quick way to test a clutch: Get the car up to speed, ~about 45-50mph, put the car in 4th gear and floor the gas pedal (just a quick mash of the pedal) , if the rpms jump up, but the car does not pick up any speed your clutch is done.

hi, i did that at 50 miles per hour, in forth and the rpms jumped from 2.3 to almost 4 and went maybe 1-3 miles pick up.so that is my clutch like i thought?how much does the tranny weigh in my car.my freind said to lower it onto me and crawl out with it on me but that sounds like a bad idea.and they said to get it all done on my own it will take 8 hours.thanks tim

Definately sounds like the clutch is bad. The trans is not that heavy so you should have no problem. If it's slipping that much don't just replace the clutch disc, make sure you install a complete clutch kit and I always recommend taking your flywheel to your local machine shop and having it resurfaced. It usually costs about $40 to do that.

ya well now this morning on my way to work i was drivin on the highway at 76 and felt a lil jerk, then when i went to get off the exit the stck was a lil stuck, i pulled it out and put it in first, it darted onto the road then nothing.it stop, i shifted to every gear and gased but nothing.i push it half a mile to work, and parked it.it turns right on(only 90,888 on it) and then you step on the clutch shift to any gear and give gas, it revs but doesn't move a inch.this is deff the clutch though right everybody?it would be the tranny with that low of miles on a 95 right?thanks tim

your problem is the clutch. I actually can't believe you took the car out knowing that the clutch was bad :smash:. Anyways tow it home and Get'er done...

ya, didn't really have a choice it is my only car to get back and forth, and me and my freind pushed it into the parking lot at my work in nassau.i am looking for the cheapest clutch so i car get her rolling again.thanks for everybodys help
