Half shaft question

How do you know if the half shafts are shot or are on the way out in our cars. Do they make a certain sound or vibration? A side from them breaking, are there any signs?

I asking because when I slow down and come to a stop, I hear a what sounds like a thump that slows as I slow down. It only happens between 10mph and lower.

Ive never heard of any signs other than a complete breakage. do you track the car? Ive only heard of them breaking while on slicks and during a hard launch. normal street use they hold up. the splines can get twisted up like a twizzler inside the hub tho in that case you cant get them out easily but stillwont break

I haven't taken the car to the track and I don't know what was done to it before I owned the car. To me it doesn't really sound like a hard thump. The only way that I can explain the noise is as the car rolls forward when coming to a stop, at a certain point in the rotation of the drive train there is a slight bump and an accompanying metal sounding noise. Like almost tapping on metal with a hammer(ever so slight though). Could it be the ring or pinion.
