battery terminal corrosion

hey went to check my oil today and noticed my positive battery terminal was caked with corrosion, it wasnt like that last month, but today the whole thing was covered. any idea what could cause this? also couldnt figure how the hell you remove the positive battery terminal, its got a weird attachment, anyone know how to remove it?

To remove it, grab an 8mm. there is a bolt on top that looks like it is there for decoration. Turn that one, it works like a worm drive, as you loosen that, the jaws open.

As for the corrosion, that is usually a sign of a lose terminal, or a possible bad ground. Check the connections.
