Kenne Bell has a long history of producing supercharger systems for the Mustang 5.0, starting with their twin-screw kit for the 1986 – 1993 Mustang that offered up anywhere from 360 to 785 rear wheel horsepower. Since then the company has provided a forced induction option for just about every Mustang made from the Mach 1 to the SVT Cobra to the Shelby GT500, all of which were capable of produced prodigious amounts of safe, reliable horsepower.
With the introduction of the new Coyote 5.0L V8 in 2011, Kenne Bell has once again developed a new supercharger system for the Mustang, although this time the company is providing customers with the option of multiple displacements and cooling options for all types of performance requirements. The supercharger is also 50 state legal and a warranty is available.
We recently visited Kenne Bell at their facility in Rancho Cucamonga, CA to get a closer look at their new supercharger, and we’ve broken down the new features and technical details which you can see below.
The twin-screw supercharger features a hard black anodized or polished billet casing, inside of which are newly designed and more efficient 4×6 lobe rotors. Three displacements are offered including the base 2.8L (pictured), a 3.6L, and a massive 4.2L supercharger.
Kenne Bell has always been a staunch supporter of the top mounted,* front drive, rear inlet design, and they stuck with that same format for the new Coyote 5.0L V8 system.
A patent-pending liquid cooling system is an option on each of the supercharger systems, providing cooler air charge, oil and supercharger temperatures and allowing for a higher boost and rpm potential.
The base system comes with a 4.25-inch pulley that produces 8 psi of boost. A 6-rib belt system comes standard that Kenne Bell says is good for up to 15 psi, but for those that want to run higher boost an optional 8-rib belt system proven up to 24 psi is also available.
Kenne Bell’s Mammoth rear induction manifold comes standard and accepts the stock 80mm throttle body with a provided adapter as well as an upgraded 168mm throttle body, ensuring maximum air flow and eliminating the need to swap out manifolds.
Like Kenne Bell’s previous supercharger systems, this one features an intake system that draws cool air from the fender well. Restriction is prevented thanks to a large exposed air filter and a massive 4.5-inch diameter pipe.
Here’s a look at the optional 168mm throttle body that flows 2150 cfm. This throttle body isn’t necessary for low boost applications, but will allow for up to 1,400 horsepower without restriction.

The design of the new 5.0L V8 provided for more space in the engine, allowing Kenne Bell to fit a 10% larger integrated intercooler into the system.

The increase in power and boost meant that Kenne Bell would need a larger heat exchanger to keep temperatures down. Pictured is the new front-mounted heat exchanger system, which is 50% larger than the one used for the 4.6-liter 3-valve V8.

This dyno graph compares the stock 5.0-liter V8 output to the 2.9L Kenne Bell kit on both 91 and 94 octane. The gains are 179/221 rear wheel horsepower and 107/135 lb-ft torque, respectively.
