Ford is letting another pony out of the barn on March 21st. The Food City 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup event at the Bristol Motor Speedway will showcase the 2011 3.7-liter V6 as its official pace car. "This is a Mustang that delivers the power and fuel efficiency customers want," said Ford Mustang Brand Manager, Fritz Wilke. "To get 305 horsepower and 31 miles per gallon has never been done before in a production vehicle. In fact this new Mustang could do the entire 500-mile race on one tank of gas." The 2011 V6 is likely the most fuel efficient Mustang to pace a NASCAR event.
The advances that Ford made in these new rides with Twin Independent Variable Camshaft Timing (Ti-VCT) and the benefits of aluminum in the engine let this little pony shine. The Ti-VCT allows variable control of valve operation and the variable cams operate on a Direct Acting Mechanical Bucket valvetrain with polished buckets to resduce friction. This pushes the V6 towards a three percent improvement in fuel economy and 10 percent improvement in power output. The upper and lower intake manifolds are tuned for a greater efficency in air delivery, a coil-on-plug design delivers ignition power coupled with piston-cooling jets and that lighter, aluminium cylinder block significantly bump up the durability and efficiency of this V6 engine. Other exciting features include a cold air induction system, dual exhaust and a deep-sump oil pan boasting 10,000-mile oil change intervals.
Highlighting what is sometimes considered the underdog of the Ford Mustang stable will surely bring all types Mustang enthusiasts together to enjoy the view on March 21st.
See you at the races!
